From bizarre beauty rituals to historic hair locks and animal oddities, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!® at Arizona Boardwalk has just unveiled a new exhibit that’s bound to turn heads: Hair Raising: The Unruly World of Strands. Open now for a limited time only, this delightfully strange and surprisingly educational exhibit explores the fascinating, freaky, and downright unbelievable world of human and animal hair.
Hair Raising features more than a dozen hair-centric displays pulled from Ripley’s global collection of the weird and wonderful. Guests will come face-to-face with:
- Hoss the Human Hairball – The Guinness World Records title holder for the largest ball of human hair, weighing over 225 pounds and created with clippings from more than 3,000 people. Care to make it personal? On select days, visitors can contribute a strand or two of their own locks to this bizarre, record-breaking ball of hair.
- Locks of Hair from Cultural Icons – Including Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, John F. Kennedy, The Beatles, and more.
- Hairballs from Pigs and Cows – Natural but nauseating, these bezoars form in the stomachs of animals and can remain there for life.
- Human Hair Trousers – Yes, really. Created by a dedicated St. Louis barber who advocates for hair recycling.
- Victorian Funeral Hair Wreaths – A touching (and slightly eerie) memento made from a loved one’s hair, once displayed in homes as a symbol of remembrance.
- Giraffe Hair Jewelry – Believed by some African cultures to bring good fortune and protect from illness.
- Hair Sculptures and Micro Art – Including a miniature clown balancing on a single strand of hair, a moth made entirely from human hair, and more.
“This is one of the most unique and conversation-starting exhibits we’ve ever hosted,” said Ran Knishinsky, Managing Partner at Arizona Boardwalk. “Hair plays a surprisingly powerful role in cultures around the world—whether it’s being used as art, turned into fashion, or preserved as a personal keepsake. This exhibit highlights just how strange, meaningful, and creative hair can be.”
Hair Raising is included with general admission and is just one part of the full Ripley’s Believe It or Not!® attraction, which features hundreds of amazing artifacts, interactive displays, oddities from the animal kingdom, pop culture memorabilia, and unbelievable but true stories from around the globe. From interactive games and photo ops to hands-on wonders for both kids and adults, Ripley’s is a can’t-miss adventure in the heart of Scottsdale.
Hair Raising: The Unruly World of Strands is ‘hair today, gone tomorrow’—a.k.a. on display for a limited time only, so make plans to check it out at Arizona Boardwalk today! For tickets and more information, visit ripleysaz.com.
